A Smithsonian Italian American History Museum, proposed for the National Mall, needs our community’s widespread support to move forward; leaders from both parties are spearheading the museum legislation.
A bipartisan bill (H.R. 1102) — introduced by U.S. Congressmen Tom Suozzi (D-NY) and Michael Rulli (R-OH) — would establish a planning commission to explore the feasibility of developing a Smithsonian Museum of Italian American History in Washington, D.C. on the National Mall.
Securing enough House votes to pass the bill and green-light the feasibility study are the crucial first steps toward obtaining federal land and funding for the world-class cultural museum.

H.R. 1102 is cosponsored by 42 U.S. Representatives and endorsed by 78 Italian American nonprofit organizations nationwide.
“As a first-generation Italian American, I am proud to introduce this legislation to begin the process of establishing a museum dedicated to the rich history and countless contributions of Italian Americans in our nation,” said Suozzi (above).
The Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations (COPOMIAO), led by Italian Sons and Daughters of America National President Basil Russo, first approached Rep. Suozzi with the Smithsonian Museum plan in 2024 to initiate federal support and collaboration.
“This prestigious historical initiative is part of our broader, dynamic movement, which includes the illumination of our heritage in Hollywood, the elevation of our younger generations and the preservation of our monuments and holidays,” said Russo. “As standard-bearers of our culture, it’s our responsibility to promote and preserve every aspect of our great story; we owe it to our ancestors and to all the generations to come.”
